Kapok fiber comes from a tropical tree native to Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and Affrica. The word "Kapok" is also used to describe the natural fibre obtained from its seed pods which are also known as Java Cotton or Silk Cotton. Kapok fibre is very light, bouyant, resilient and resistant to water; although it is very labor intensive to harbest and separate; nevertheless it is a healthy and natural alternative to down in mattresses, pillows, upholstery, and even insulation. Once a year all the leaves of the kapok tree fall and about every five to ten years large white to pinkish bell-shaped flowers are produced after the tree is leafless. The flowers open up in the early evening attracting bats to suck the nectar. The flower then develops into a fruit or seedpod of about 6 inches long. The pod is filled with brown seeds and a cotton-like, wooly floss. Before being replaced by synthetics, the kapok fiber was used as the floatation for life preservers because it is eight times lighter than cotton and five times more bouyant than cork in addition to being resistant to rot. Indigenous people throught out the ages have worshiped and considered the Kapok three sacred. In Affrica it is said that sleeping on pillows made of kapok will bring good luck, purify, and empower your material and spiritual energy as well as bring good dreams and saintly vibrations. |
